What is the ACT?
The ACT is a standardized college admissions test that covers four core areas: English, Math, Reading, and Science, plus an optional Writing section. Unlike the SAT, the ACT includes a dedicated Science section that tests your ability to interpret data, evaluate experiments, and reason scientifically — you don't need to memorize the periodic table, but you need to read graphs like a pro.
Test Format & Sections
English (45 minutes, 75 questions)
Tests grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. Passages with underlined portions — you pick the best revision or confirm it's correct.
Math (60 minutes, 60 questions)
Pre-algebra through trigonometry. Calculator allowed on the entire section. No formula sheet provided — memorize your formulas.
Reading (35 minutes, 40 questions)
Four passages: prose fiction, social science, humanities, natural science. You're tested on comprehension, inference, and vocabulary in context.
Science (35 minutes, 40 questions)
Not a science knowledge test — it's a data interpretation test. You'll analyze charts, graphs, experiments, and conflicting viewpoints.
Scoring
Each section scored 1–36, composite is the average. National average is about 20. A 25+ is solid for most schools, 30+ is competitive for top universities, 34+ puts you in the 99th percentile.

Plan for 2–4 months. The Science section trips up most students — give it extra attention even if you're strong in STEM. Take at least 3–4 full timed practice tests before the real thing.
