What is the NCLEX-RN?
The NCLEX-RN is the licensure exam you must pass to practice as a Registered Nurse in the United States. Since April 2023, the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) has been in effect with new question types designed to test clinical judgment — not just knowledge recall. The test is computer-adaptive, meaning it adjusts difficulty based on your answers. You could finish in as few as 85 questions or go up to 150.

Next Generation Question Types
The NGN introduced case studies and new item types: Extended Drag and Drop, Cloze (drop-down), Enhanced Hot Spot, Matrix/Grid, and more. These questions test your clinical judgment using the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (NCJMM).
Client Needs Categories
All questions fall into 8 areas: Safe/Effective Care Environment (Management + Safety/Infection), Health Promotion, Psychosocial Integrity, Physiological Integrity (Basic Care, Pharmacological, Reduction of Risk, Physiological Adaptation).
Scoring
Pass or fail — no numeric score. The computer-adaptive algorithm estimates your ability level with 95% confidence. The minimum is 85 questions; max is 150. Getting fewer questions doesn't necessarily mean you failed — it means the algorithm made a confident decision.

Most graduates study 4–8 weeks after completing nursing school. Full-time study (6–8 hours/day) for 4 weeks is a common approach. Part-time, plan for 6–8 weeks.
Top Study Tips
- Practice NGN question types. The new clinical judgment questions are different from traditional NCLEX prep. Make sure your study materials cover them.
- Do 75–150 practice questions per day. Volume matters. Focus on understanding rationales, not just getting the right answer.
- Don't study content you already know. Focus on weak areas. Most students need to review pharmacology and prioritization.
- Use the Pearson VUE Trick sparingly. It's not 100% reliable and will stress you out. Just wait for your official results.
